Biography

I am a microbiologist with interests in molecular biology and outreach, with a specific interest working with underrepresented groups in Higher Education and beyond to showcase science as degree option and career. My PhD and postdoctoral position, both at the Norwich Research Park, focused on developing techniques to profile gut bacteria present in the human gastrointestinal tract and determine their influence on the human host.

Since 2017 I have been employed by UEA as an Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences and as a Widening Participation Academic Lead (Science). I teach undergraduate microbiology lectures and laboratory practicals. I also work with underrepresented groups in Higher Education and beyond to highlight science as a degree option and career. This includes working with primary, secondary and post 16 schools to facilitate pupil activities on the UEA campus, the Norwich Research Park and within schools. These initiatives incorporate showcasing the fascinating subject areas of microbiology and molecular biology. As part of this work, I lead the development of microbiology themed interactive workshops and talks plus support others, particularly PhD students, to design and deliver their own.
